Not necessarily. Many of St. Petersburg’s older residents still refer to the city as Leningrad, and while recognising the shortcomings of the Soviet regime, long for the relative stability of those days. Plus among the city’s younger population, things Soviet have a certain kitsch value (and of course advertisers still make frequent use of the prevalent Soviet colours red, grey and black, and those iconic propaganda posters – see the current Arbat Prestige advertisements, with the cruiser Aurora, for example). For many, I imagine, renaming the cinema would seem unnecessary and more than that, a pity.
