Opened on May 30, 1913, the former Argus Theatre operated as such until 1917 when it was renamed Lloyd’s Theatre on November 13, 1917. On June 14, 1919 it was renamed Strand Theatre. It was closed in 1920. Unclear if the cinema itself was torn down, but the venerable Zelo Restaurant currently sits on this spot.

The Argus Theatre was designed by Los Angeles architect A.L.Valk. It was a conversion and expansion of an existing retail building, and was announced in the March 20, 1913 issue of Builder & Contractor magazine.
Arthur Lawrence Valk was referred to as a “…motion picture specialist….” in an article in the October 11, 1913 issue of Southwest Contractor and Manufacturer magazine, at the time he closed his office and joined in a partnership with his father, architect Lawrence Bolton Valk.
The theatre opened or placed its first ad as Argus on May 30th, 1913. It was renamed Lloyd’s on November 13th, 1917, and then Strand on June 14th, 1919. It closed in 1920. Grand opening ads posted.
