The Rainbow was open in February of 2024, showing Pulp Fiction and Back to the Future. Looks clean and bright, with a nice restaurant open across the street, go buy a ticket if you are in the area!
I was interested in who now owns the Rainbow and found this site. I was born in 76 and I remember watching movies here; Battle Beyond the Stars (1980). At the time Mr. Marvin James owned and operated it and showed mostly kids movies; G and PG. I used to mow his yard and do handy work for him in high school. It was then sold and the seats taken out and the floor leveled for aerobics classes. My best friends mom owned it gave classes. We used to play upstairs while they held classes. I haven’t been in there since 86. I’ll look for some pics next time visit my parents.
I’m one of the theatre junkies rdean showed the projection room to. He told me that Roy Rogers used to stop at the Rainbow on his way to Uvalde to see Dale. He would watch people watching one of his movies.
And just an “update” on the Rainbow threatre. The ORIGINAL projectors are still upsatirs in the “booth”. Circa 1939. The “booth” is exactly as it was the day the theatre was closed and on occasion I take “ theatre junkies” (their words not mine) up to the booth and show them. The original projectors came from a US Navy ship being “scutlled” at Galveston in 1939. Anyone welcome to come take a “lookesee”. (and no they are not for sale) Sorry.
Ok..the Rainbow Theatre was opened in 1943..closed in 1976. Trust me on this. I own it. My wife and I now own an antique shop inside the theatre. CORRECT address is 410 Paris Street. There is no (and never has been) a “New Castro” theatre in Castroville. Come see us.
The Rainbow opened in 1950 and closed in 1990.
