Almost finished

This theater sits on Confederate Square. A local told me it was named for the owner, a Mr. Lynn.

The facade is very interesting, almost a Bauhaus style. The Lynn Theatre opened in 1947. The vertical portion of the marquee is especially cool, with a pattern of stars and a pole on top with a light on it (which seems to be a popular feature for Texas theaters).

The Lynn Theatre was reopened on June 24, 2009 as a movie theatre, but was closed in April 2010. The building was sold in September 2011, and reopened as a live theatre March 15, 2012. First-run films were added to the programming from November 2012. It was closed on June 14, 2020 with Harrison Ford in “Raiders of the Lost Ark”. By 2021 the theatre had been abandoned.

Here is a fresh link to the March 1, 1947, Boxoffice item with architect Jack Corgan’s rendering of the proposed Texan Theatre in Gonzales, which was opened as the Lynn Theatre.

The Lynn Theatre’s official web site link is dead. It appears that they are now using this Facebook page in lieu of an actual web site.

My fiance' and I visited the Lynn Theater on 01/17/15 and Mary, the owner gave us a nice impromptu tour. She stated that she and her husband also operate another theater with a 3rd on the way. Hopefully they will be open a good long time. They have 3K resolution projectors but she and her husband are enthusiasts so the 35mm projectors were still in the booth so she explained how it all works now and how it used to work. Very nice lady.

8/21 - Does not seem to be working, has a large “No Trespassers” sign on the front door. Seems just to be using the marque for city announcements etc. (current pics added)

The last events at the Lynn Theatre posted on their Facebook page were movie showings on June 12, 13, and 14, 2020. If those showings did take place (there have been no posts to the page since June 12) then this house closed on June 14, 2020 with a showing of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” The “About” section at the top of the Facebook page now says “Permanently Closed.”

The minutes of the April 23, 2018 meeting of the Gonzales Economic Development Corporation reveal that, at that time at least, the Lynn was owned by the city’s EDC, and I have found no evidence that this has changed. If the Lynn Theatre has a future, it is in the hands of the City of Gonzales.
