I remember chaperoning with others a special school screening here in the 1970s of Roman Polanski’s “Macbeth.” La Salle Academy English department. I remember students laughing a lot and being rowdy.
Reopened by National Amusements as the Apple Valley Cinemas on April 30th, 1993, on a discount policy. Grand opening ad posted.
Opened on August 26th, 1970 by Esquire Theatres of America, Inc. Grand opening ad posted.
Sad news… Wish someone preserved it
The space is gutted for conversion into Planet Fitness.
I was born and raised in Smithfield and vivited this theater since childhood. The girl I was always in love with, Kim Santangini, had a sister who worked there. I would always ask her to say hello to Kim, hoping Kim would call me. She never did! LOL I was devastated in 2010 when, right after some very wet weather, I was met at the door by an employee who said that they were having computer problems and so they couldn’t let anyone in. I have never been inside again. I feel like I have lost an old friend.
Anyone looking for information about apple valley should contact the owner Peter Kafash at corporate (212) 564-4460
This theater has closed and has been served with an eviction notice: View link
This cinema and the one in East Providence are now owned by Cinema Holdings. www.cinemaholdings.com they have installed 2 technicolor 3-d systems
I can’t believe that happened. A mom and pop theatre most likely wouldn’t pull that trick.
No Mike that never happened in MY THEATRES,It was great to have the keys to hang around after or before hours.I could have lived in any of my theatres if they had showers in them.I did have one clean up man who lived in the back room of the LOEWS MELROSE I came to open up one day a Disney movie there was a line down the sidewalk when I got there and I went inside and the theatre had not been touched a far as cleaning,I got my staff to do the best we could do before we opened it was a wreak from a busy Friday night,I found him passed out in his backroom apartment as I called it, I hired a new clean up man that day.
Trazadone, Can’t believe they were closed for Cleaning either. they might have been “partying” that goes on a lot in theatres at least in my day.
This is a very rare National Amusements theatre that reopened under different management.
I live near this cinema and it’s a crapshoot. On the one hand it’s close, cheap, and convenient, however on the other hand the cinema is very inconsistent in a number of ways. For example, a moment ago (12/21/07, 11am) I called he cinema to get times. The phone rang and rang. No picked up and there was no recording. A few months ago I wanted to catch Halloween and when I went to the cinema for a Saturday night 10pm show, I found the doors locked. An usher came up to the door and told me they closed because they wanted to “clean”. Wait, what? I worked at Showcase Cinemas for 6 years and I know it doesn’t work this way. My sense was that they wanted to go home early. I was furious because it was now too late for me to get to another theater in time. When the theater is open the price is right. My greatest complaint is that the usher doesn’t “usher”. That is, he/she doesn’t periodically peek into the theaters to ensure that teenagers aren’t misbehaving or to check the sound or temperature of the theater.
Trademark Cinemas re-opened the theater on Jan, 19 2007. I was there for one of the very first shows. I have to say that the staff at the theater does a fine job. They are really great to the customers and are very friendly. The owners on the other hand shot this theater open without doing a lot of necessary improvements. It was almost two months before they got the road marquee up.Almost 3 months or more before they got the concession menu up and even now it is thrown together. The theater was very dirty at the opening. The owner which introduced himself to me (Mark Clement) was smoking in the lobby of the theater, while the employees and managers ran around to get everything together. Trademark has promised since the beginning to make our town’s theater state of the art. Most of the houses are not digital, smell of mildew, leak when it rains, they are cold in cold weather and hot in hot weather.
The list of corporate downfalls goes on and on and that is what I think the above statements are talking about. So from another film fan, the above statements are true.
Your outside marquee neds some work- It looks horrible- move titles are not lined up- often spelled wrong- ratings missing-
The above statement was not false, I am one of the “regular” customers who brought it to the attention of the staff. I didn’t find anything rude about, in fact it showed me that the employees cared enough to stick up for their work place. If this last statement was sent by a manager, you are fortunate to have employees who care about where they work. SHAME ON YOU! My kids and their friends are there like clockwork every Friday night. I also must say I found the young employee to be very kind and helpfull, not disgruntled. Disgruntled employees shoot people nowadays. That was a bit too harsh. Anyways, we will still enjoy our movies each week regardless. Such drama……
The above statement is false. It was not sent by Apply Valley Management whatsoever. A disgruntled employee took it apon himself to write this in regards to the theater. I apologize to the insults to our customers and we do apreciate every person who walks through our theater doors. Please disregard the names used from the above statement.
We are the current managers of Trademark Cinemas Apple Valley, and let me firstly say. Thanks to everyone who has returned time and time again. We try our hardest with what little we have here at the cinema. Like stated above, we are an old local cinema. This place has been running now for over 35 years, yes there have been some complaints, but those complaints come from the spoiled and the people who have incredibly high-expectations of this cinema. The prices here are the cheapest that you can get, and you can still get the fullest of the full when it comes to movie experience. Your cinematic adventures will be a great experience once you come and give us a chance if you haven’t been here before. Since the cinema has been bought out by Trademark Cinemas, we have been progressively doing better, and it is almost crass to state that our cinema doesn’t try it’s hardest to bring forth the best quality that we can provide.
So not only do we have the cheapest prices, loving customers, a caring/wonderful staff; we also have bargain tuesday prices when we slash our prices on the tickets even lower than our matinee price which is five dollars. Group prices as well, we run this place great and we don’t plan on going “buh-bye” anytime soon.
Again, thanks to everyone who has supported us throughout the years, and as time shows that you are the greatest customers that we could ever ask for. Thanks everyone
Sincerely,
Andy, Joe, Rob, Nora, Mandy, Katie, Kerri, Diana, Tarren, Tessa, Chris, Vanessa, Rob P., Pete, Mike, Sal, Ann, and Ian
( THE STAFF OF TRADEMARK CINEMAS APPLE VALLEY)
I have been going to Apple Valley for over 30 years. My best friend worked there, as well as five of her brothers and sisters. We payed 50 cents –$1.50 and we didn’t go for the comfortable seats. We went because there were and still are no long lines and it was OURS. What I mean by that is that this is where the locals went. I had many dates there and now so does my stepdaughter. Perhaps in this technological, spoiled world, people expected another IMAX, but the rest of us locals are just happy Apple Valley lives on. If you don’t like the snacks, bring your own. Most kids, including my young son will remember the movie experience, not all the other crap….
will be part of the new trademark cinemas

According to a brief article from the 9/2/06 Providence Journal Business Roundup, National Amusements closed the Apple Valley due to “business related factors, some of which are related to a population shift” – not because they switched from a dollar show to a first run, full-price house with minimal improvements.
This theater is now closed.
I was only here once. It must have been on a visit back to RI. The film was ABOUT LAST NIGHT, the film versio of David Mamet’s play, SEXUAL PERVERSITY IN CHICAGO. Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Jim Belushi & Elizabeth Perkins were in the film. Vincent Canby in “The Times” panned the film, but I think it is a real sleeper.
drove by the theatre and noticed that part of the marguee was failing apart looks like the wind got a hold of it-
