The IMAX Theatre at Portage Place is IMAX’s 54th movie theater to operate, and the first in both Winnipeg and Manitoba. Opening on September 30, 1987 with “Heart Land” and “Speed”, two 37-minute IMAX-formatted films that played in a loop, the IMAX was a separate movie house located elsewhere inside Portage Place, as the mall also has a Famous Players triplex that already has its own page on Cinema Treasures, which opened almost two weeks before the IMAX.
The IMAX here as of its 1987 opening features a six-channel surround sound, 276-seats capacity, and a gigantic screen measuring 72x55ft, and is almost 5½ stories tall. The announcement of the IMAX in Winnipeg was announced by IMAX spokesperson Jennifer Rae in May 1986 during a meeting in Toronto, and the original projectionist is Senior Systems engineer Ken Vigar.
Unfortunately, because of several years of substantial losses, such as money loss, declining viewership, and growing competition, the IMAX Theater at Portage Place closed down for the final time on March 31, 2013.
