The Empire Theatre opened on Hilo’s Haili Street on September 24, 1921, built by Adam Baker, and replaced an earlier theatre of the same name around the corner on Kamehameha Avenue. Purchased by Consolidated Amusement on November 23, 1933, it closed May 25, 1940 and was converted to a bowling alley and then retail. A portion of the rear had collapsed, but the front of what was the auditorium has been a dance studio for many years.
