Valley Mall was announced in April of 1973 as a $16 million center anchored by Montgomery Ward, J.C. Penney’s, McCroy’s and 67 other stores including a movie theater. Ward’s opened first on April 16, 1974 and it neighbor - a triplex cinema - under construction. The Valley Mall officially opened on August 15, 1974. However, the Valley Mall Theatres 3 opened on August 1, 1974 with “For Pete’s Sake,” “SPYS,” and “Our Time.” It was operated by Jack Fruchtman Sr.’s Baltimore-based JF Theatres Inc. with one cinema at 404 and two at 362 each for a total of 1,128 seats. Manos Quality Theatres of Greensburg, Pennsylvania took on the venue in February 1, 1980 along with the Hagerstown Twin and the Hager Drive-In. Carmike Cinemas purchased Manos Quality Theatres in November of 1993. It rebranded here as the Carmike Valley Mall Cinema 3 on December 20, 1993. They closed on August 20, 1998 with “Snake Eyes,” “Mafia” and “Doctor Doolittle.”
