The Bijou Theatre was one of the first nickelodeons in downtown Lawrenceville. When it opened in February of 1908, it was said to be one of just two such operations in town along with the nickelodeon in Adams Hall. Opening films were “The Man Who Walks on The Water”, “The Hostage” (tinted version), and “The Squally Beach”.
The Bijou Theatre suffered a fire that reports said likely should have destroyed the building; so J.C. Pinkerton moved his surviving equipment to the Southwest Corner of the Square rising from the Bijou’s “ashes” as the Phoenix Theatre. The Bijou Theatre closed permanently in 1917 after nine years of service.
