Colonial Cinemas

There’s not a lot of information that I can find about this theater, so some of this information can be wrong. The Colonial Cinemas opened during the 1970’s as a twin-screener and was operated by Cinemette. It was later operated by Cinema World, and finally Carmike before closing in the mid-2000’s.

The former theater was then purchased by local benefactors and donated to the Central Ohio Technical College in 2006.

Any additional information on this former Cinemette would be greatly appreciated, and will be updated as soon as we get information.

In an odd coincidence, the address 232-234 S. Main Street is shown as being occupied by “Motion Pictures” on the 1913 Sanborn map of Mount Vernon. All the theaters listed at Mount Vernon in the 1914-1915 AMPD were at other addresses, so whatever house was at this location didn’t last long. I don’t know when the building that housed the nameless theater was demolished, but it might have been torn down for the Colonial Cinemas project.

I just looked through three aerial views between 1958 and 1960, and it shows a parking lot, meaning that the old nameless theater was demolished many years before the Colonial Cinemas was built. The Colonial Cinemas had to be built at that parking lot site.
