Crown Theatre

The Trymore Theatre was a true neighborhood theatre in the silent era of cinema exhibition. Opened in June of 1913, it was going after another Mangolia Street exhibitor less than a mile away that had opened in the nickelodeon, store show era - the Magnolia Theatre at 1305 Magnolia Street. Operator Bruno Hornuff lived up to the theater’s namesake in obtaining better bookings and providing more amenities in outlasting the Magnolia Theatre.

Happyland Theatre operator Henry Lazarus also had opened his first theater in 1913 about five miles away in the Bywater neighborhood. He took on the Trymore Theatre changing its name on June 26, 1925 to the Crown Theatre after a refresh and playing King Vidor’s “Wine of Youth”.

Lazarus closed likely opting out at the 15-year leasing point and deciding not to crown the theatre with sound technology. The venue closed on December 4, 1928 with Sally O'Neil starring as “Becky”. He would turn his attention to larger venues in the Central Business District including the Crown Theatre and the Newcomb Theatre. The building housing the Crown Theatre has since been demolished.
