Built in 1882 the Wood’s Opera House was Wellington’s first theatre. The 50'x 80'venue was on the second floor of the J.G. Wood Bank building.

It was one of the few buildings in the downtown area to survive the 1892 tornado.

As times changed films were introduced. In 1908 there was a rivalry with the nearby, recently established, Edison Electric Theatre.

The building was destroyed by fire in 1909.
