The Galaxy Drive-In was opened August 21, 1963 with John Wayne in “The Longest Day”. It was a nice drive-in located on Dequindre Road just up the street from the Hazel Park race track. It was closed in 1986.

Interestingly, the drive-in’s footprint was greatly reduced when I-696 was built through the area in the mid-1970s. In this 1970s aerial, you can see that the NW portion of the drive-in field was removed:

August 21st, 1963 grand opening ad in photo section.
The last “stand alone” drive-in in the Detroit area to open. (The University in Ann Arbor and Willow near Willow Run opened between 1965-1968.) (The Bel-Air 2 was sort of a stand alone, but it was always referred to as a “twin” to the main Bel-Air.) The unique feature of this theater is the speakers were attached to one pole, and the in-car heaters were on a separate pole. It may also be the only drive-in in the area where the screen faced due west, meaning a later showtime start than the others as the sun set.
Opened on 21st August 1963 with “Cruise of the eagle” and “The Longest day”.
Closed in 1986.
