Pleasant Drive-In

Bill Boren, later of Boren Theatres, and Dick Zachary built the Pleasant Drive-In a mile south of Mt. Pleasant in 1950 accommodating 375 cars. The $54,000 ozoner opened on June 16, 1950 with Anne Baxter in “You’re My Everything”. Walter Terrell was the opening day projectionist with Harlan H. Dunlap in charge.

The theater was sold to Mrs. Robert Sleigh who, in turn, sold it to local newspaper editor Robert B. Palmer and operated by he and his wife. The Palmers closed for the season on November 2, 1962 with Shirley Knight in “The Couch”. The drive-in is then looted in the off-season… and not mentioned again.

The Sleighs reacquired it after the 1965 season ended. They didn’t advertise so it may have simply gone out of business. But based on comments, it may have actually ceased operations following the 1970 season and at the expiration of a 20-year leasing term. It has since been demolished.

A 1985 aerial shows the drive-in intact, although it is clearly closed. It was demolished by 1995.

Today, no trace of the drive-in remains.
