The Rio Theatre opened July 6, 1944, by William Peters of Manteca, who operated theaters in Manteca, Escalon and Riverbank.

The opening movie was Fred MacMurray and Paulette Goddard in “Standing Room Only”.

The Ripon Record reported the 400-seat, $25,000 theater was designed by Otto A. Deichmann of San Francisco.

On May 30, 1968, the Ripon Record reported the Rio Theatre was closed for lack of patronage.

In March of 1972 an insurance agency moved into the building. By 2012 it was occupied by a Mexican restaurant & bar, which was still open in 2024.
