Christmas tree up outside of the complex. Surprising it’s not green to go with the release of Wicked.
I was there in 1988 with the garage and been there many times with all 3 renovations of the theater. I believe i have photos in the photos section
Mike Radio: Yeah, I remember that. There was the cinema by itself, with the Universal Amphitheater and Universal Studios down the way a bit (back when Universal was just the studio tour and stunt shows, with the occasional concert at the amphitheater).
I remember this theater pre-dates cityWalk! It was sitting there by itself with the parking deck across a road right now in front of the theater. You had across the road to get to the parking deck. That’s all that was up there. anyone else remember?
Please update, total seats 1862 (seat reduction due to Recliners)
Please add to description, after AMC and Loews merge, all screens had stadium seating May 4, 2007 and in 2016, AMC installed their signature Recliners in all auditorium.
Please update the theatre name to Universal Cinema AMC at CityWalk Hollywood 19
I went to Universal Studios yesterday for my birthday and I saw this theatre
This location has AMC’s new self service concessions stand setup called “The Marketplace”
I followed the news about Justice League because it has a 70mm release and people who saw it in that format regretted that it was in 1.85 aspect ratio instead of the full-frame 2.20 ratio of standard 70mm. So I guess you saw it in the intended aspect ratio but IMDB wasn’t accurate on this one. It rarely happens but it does in a few cases unfortunately.
I just saw Justice League, I notice they seem to be shown in ratio 1.89:1.
And since Justice League is 2.35:1 (on imdb), does that means they crop out the sides?! What the heck!?
Happy belated 30th!!! Looking at the pictures of when it first opened it was ahead of its time. The success of this theater laid the groundwork for other megaplexes, although it lacked stadium seating when it first opened.
I’ve been to this theater both when it was still AMC Universal Citywalk and when it was renamed Universal Cinema. Back when it still had it’s old name, I went to this theater on a trip to California 2 years ago, and saw ‘'Ant-Man’‘(in IMAX 3D) and ’‘Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation’‘(I really liked both films, but I thought that ’‘Mission: Impossible-Rogue Nation’‘ was a bit better than ’‘Ant-Man’‘, but I think both of them are really good films) in their IMAX theater. Their screen was large and huge and had amazing sound, but that was nothing to the huge renovation it got. When I next went to this theater this summer(when it was renamed Universal Cinema), it really had a massive renovation. Recliners, some auditoriums featuring Dolby Atmos sound, and a huge overhaul to their IMAX theater, now with the IMAX Laser system. I saw ’‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’‘(in IMAX 3D) in their new IMAX theater, and wow. What an awesome experience it was. Not only was the movie awesome(it’s one of my favorite films of 2017 so far), the screen was still massive, but the image quality and sound got a major overhaul. The image quality looked a lot better than the old IMAX theater, and the sound. Wow. EXTREMELY LOUD, BUT VERY SATISFYING. If I went back to California, I would definitely go to this theater again. It’s awesome and very worth it.
I’ve posted pictures of the cinema when it opened in the eighties (exterior, lobby and large auditorium). Credits to the Mesbur+Smith Architect office, who designed the original complex. Pictures are copyrighted Cineplex Corporation Corporation, photographer name unknown.
it’s new official name is “Universal Cinema an AMC Theatre” according to it’s official yelp page. https://www.yelp.com/biz/universal-cinema-an-amc-theatre-universal-city But AMC’s internal systems including the website still use the AMC Citywalk 19 name.
Ok. I think the theme park is more popular than the cinema here. AMC should also renovate the Universal cinema in Orlando too.
The AMC listing online may still say AMC Universal CityWalk 19…but there are photos in the Photos tab that clearly show this theatre’s name as Universal Cinema. A name update – with an AKA – should settle the confusion.
Price is just about $1 more than the Arclight that’s a few miles away…and STILL a ton cheaper than El Capitan and Chinese.
I guess those recent upgrades don’t come cheap. It is now $17.75 (not including any online purchase surcharges)for a general admission ticket in the evenings for a non 3D show.
Went here on 12/27. Fabulous looking redo. Dolby Atmos is indeed equipped in all the regular auditoriums.
it also sounds that ALL the auditoriums are outfitted to playback in Dolby Atmos as well
Looks like this theatre has been renovated and officially renamed Universal Cinema. They’ve added reserved seating, recliners and all auditoriums are now running Laser Projection.
When I worked at the Cineplex Odeon Universal City Cinemas in 1991, the seating was as follows:
1: 787 (607 on the main floor, 180 in the balcony) 2 and 13: 283 3, 4, 11 and 12: 280 each 5 and 10: 324 each 6: 221 7: 220 8: 219 9: 225 14: 780 (612 on the main floor, 168 in the balcony) 15: 174 16: 175 17: 173 18: 177
1, 6, 10 and 14 were 70mm capable. 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10, 11, 13 and 14 were THX certified.
When I worked for AMC in 2013-2014, the seat counts had changed considerably:
1 and 14: 376
2, 3, 4, 11, 12 and 13: 163 each
5 and 10: 217 each
6, 8 and 9: 131 each
7: 130
15 and 17: 98 each
16 and 18: 93 each
IMAX: 369
The IMAX screen is now sporting Laser projection.
