In 1903, then a primarily German speaking town in Austria-Hungary, now a Czech Republic town of Krnov on the border with Poland. Originally built and operated as the Workers House which has hosted regular films since at least 1917. The cinema was renamed Democracy Cinema in 1948.
In the mid-1950’s, with the introduction of wide-screen film the Democracy Cinema was unable to screen them due to the layout of the building. Starting in 1958, the corner entrance from the Opava River was walled up and a new entrance to the cinema was created from the side of the building. The two-storey hall was replaced by an elevated auditorium and the projection screen optically filled the entire visual wall. The alterations were carried out by architect Cestmir Slapeta.
It reopened in 1961 as the 560-seat Panorama Mir with the Czech widescreen film “Smyk”. The name placed an emphasis on the width of the screen which is 7 by 15 meters. After it was equipped with 70mm projectors, it was renamed Kino Mir 70. April 2025 marks the 18th annual hosting of a 70mm Film Festival. The current seating capacity has been reduced to 320-seats.
