The Nu Gulf Theatre was a wooden structure seating 485 residents in downtown Pelly, part of the Tri-Cities which included Baytown and Goose Creek. The venue opened in 1927.

Ten years later, on October 28, 1936, the Nu Gulf Theatre became the No Gulf as it essentially exploded after hours when dangerous nitrate film caught fire leading to wood timbers flying in all directions. The entire area could have burned if not for the firefighters of the day - one of whom was injured in the blast.

The last showtimes for the venue turned out to be October 27, 1936 with Robert Montgomery with “Trouble for Two” - a print that was likely the one that exploded. The theater was replaced by the Alamo Theatre a year later. In 1948, the Tri-Cities of Pelly, Goose Creek and Baytown were combined into a single city called Baytown.

Is there other films that got caught on fire that comes along with its print of “Trouble For Two”? I’m very sure a few short subjects were also involved into some “Trouble”.

Fortunately, there was just enough time to rush the short subjects to safety (unconfirmed). The venue was also known as the Nu Gulf Theater - without the hyphen. And, in case it comes up, there had been a plain old, Gulf Theatre, in town as well.

So its very likely that the movie is the only film that got destroyed, and nothing else. I’m very sure the projectionist also rescued the daters and the trailers since the shorts were safely recovered.
