Built in 1904, Corydon’s YMCA was a hulking two story brick Romanesque Revival style structure. The YMCA was on the ground floor, and an auditorium with stage and scenery was on the second floor. The fire department was located in the basement of the fly tower.
By 1914 at the latest, movies were being shown here. It seems that the theatre operated under the Gem Theatre name at first, but by 1926 it appeared in listings as the Auditorium. The theatre operated into 1937, after the Wayne Theatre had opened, but was closed by 1938.
The building today is in fair condition. Most of the windows have been bricked over, or filled in with cheap tiny replacements. A huge scar of mismatched brick on the rear indicates that the fly tower may have collapsed at some point. The entire building is operated as The Brick, an event/performance space, hotel, and pizza restaurant. Photos indicate that the stage remains on the second floor.
