The Theatre Royal was opened on 26th January 1905 with Norman Macowan’s Theatre Company performing “Monsieur Beaucaire”. It was designed by Loughborough based architect Albert E. King. It had a 26ft wide proscenium. The stage was 25ft deep and there were eight dressing rooms.

In 1910 it was taken over by Leon Vint and became a cinema, renamed Vint’s Electric Hippodrome. By 1912 it had become a variety theatre. By 1915 it had reverted back to its Theatre Royal name. On 12th May 1931 an overnight fire destroyed the stage end of the building. Luckily, the Safety Curtain was down which saved the theatre. The stage was rebuilt and it reopened as a cinema, with some occasional stage productions, renamed Theatre Royal Cinema, operated by the Charles K. Deeming Circuit. It was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system.

Closed in February 1953 with the Loughborough Amateur Operatic Society production of “Merrie England”. It was demolished in 1972.
