Built to replace the earlier Pavilion Theatre, later renamed Ritz Theatre, which was destroyed by fire on 13th April 1954 and has its own page on Cinema Treasures.

The Pavilion Complex was designed by Samuel Beverley of well known theatre/cinema architectural firm Verity & Beverley. Samuel Beverley died in 1959 before work began on construction of the theatre in 1960. His son-in-law Anthony Denny took over the project which was built in 1960, opening in 1961. It has a 1,027-seat Pavilion Theatre (548-seats in the stalls and 465-seats in the circle and the boxes have 14-seats). It is equipped for stage shows and films. It has 12-dressing rooms.

There is also an Ocean Room which has seating provided for 720 and is used for conferences, banquets, cabaret shows etc. The Pavilion Theatre is owned and operated by the local Council.

Since the 9-screen Cineworld multiplex closed on December 30, 2024 (it has its own page on Cinema Treasures) films are now being screening in the Weymouth Pavilion.
