The town’s first movie theatre was housed in the existing Fritz Thurkow Building became home to the Virginia Theatre by Ed Bergen opening on November 28, 1914. The third operator of the venue, C.E. Gross, took over the venue renaming it as the Marcellus Theatre on June 24, 1926 with Clara Bow in “Black Lightning”.
The Marcellus Theatre scuffled with both the Depression and being unable to transition to sound. It closed on December 7, 1929. Mr and Mrs. M.D. Friedman took on the venue installing DeForest' sound system in June of 1931.
In December of 1934, the venue reopened as the Lerner Theatre on December 8, 1934 with Ken Maynard in “Smoking Guns” and free Cracker Jack for the kids. The Lerner Theatre closed permanently on February 3, 1935 with Frank Craven in “That’s Gratitude”. The venue was refreshed for a retail shop for Beadle’s Cream Store.
