The south side of the Bryan Business Square had a modest Grand Opera House turned Grand Theatre / Grand Picture Show Theatre on Butler Street. In 1909, the Toledo’s Spear & Simpson took over the venue from Richardson and Rhoads who had already converted the venue from live to film programming with some live vaudeville. On October 7, 1909, the Grand Picture Show Theatre moved to the Square’s East side into the Kampf Building at 133 South Main Street.

The Grand Theatre was a success and operated along with the North Side as early Bryan silent movie houses. When the Temple Theatre opened in 1921, the North Side was the first movie house to close. The Grand Theatre would be purchased by Temple operators J. Stuart Cangney, Sada MacPhial and Jack Thompson in March of 1922. They would only operate the Grand Theatre for a year closing it in January of 1923. The venue was converted to retail and became the long-running home of J.J. Newberry’s, a chain of dime stores, that lasted in this location until 1979. The building was still standing in the 2020’s.
