Prior to this theater’s opening, Yokosuka had six movie theaters in total and all of them closed one-by-one until only this one remained.
Located on the 4th floor of Shoppers Plaza Yokosuka, the Yokosuka Joy Cinemas opened its doors with three screens on April 25, 1991. Two more screens were added in December 1994 followed by another three screens in December 1995, bringing the screen total to eight. After renovation on December 11, 1999, the theater was renamed the Yokosuka Humax Cinemas.
It has 1,315 seats in total. Screen 1 has the most seats with 287 seats and five wheelchairs, and Screen 8 has the least with 121 seats and two wheelchairs. The rest of the screens have ranging capacities from 126-203. Screens 2, 3, 5, and 6 all have four wheelchairs while Screens 7 and 8 have two wheelchairs. Screen 4 only has one wheelchair.
The Yokosuka Humax Cinemas closed temporarily April 23, 2019 in connection of the temporarily closure of the Shoppers Plaza. This didn’t last long though as the theater was renovated. However, it was originally planned to be reopened in May 2020 but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it reopened the following month June 5, 2020. It has 10 screens with a downsized capacity of 1,200 seats. All of its auditoriums have two wheelchairs each except Screens 7 and 8 with only one wheelchair.
Again, Screen 1 is the largest with 296 and the smallest is Screen 10 with 64. The rest of the screens have ranging capacities from 75-228.
