The Sapphire Theatre was a silent movie house located on the ground floor of the Aethelwold Hotel operating from 1917 to 1921. John Glenn operated the Sapphire Theatre beginning in the back of his jewelry shop and was forced to close for over a month due to the influenza pandemic late in 1918.
Glenn would move the Sapphire to the Aethelwold Hotel which he said had better ventilation and its own side entry. But the quarters were tight and Glenn bought the Crary Hotel which had passed from T.B. Crary to Ida Bryant. He had planned to place the theatre in the dining room there but when the Gaiety Theatre in Rosman - already equipped to be a movie house - came available, he changed plans ending the Sapphire Theatre.
The Sapphire Theatre appears to have ceased operations on May 14, 1921 with June Caprice in “The Sky Ranger” (aka “The Man Who Stole the Moon”) a serial. The title was then moved to the Gaiety Theatre in Rosman on May 16, 1921.
