Located in Waipukurau, the largest town in the Central Hawke’s Bay district on the east coast of the North Island, the Civic Theatre opened on 12th November 1981. It was a replacement for the Municipal Theatre in nearby Kitchener Street, which had been declared an earthquake risk (and was subsequently demolished).
The Civic Theatre was designed by architect Peter Holland, based in nearby Hastings.
It appears to have closed at some stage, as there is information that it “re-opened” in 2016. The building is owned by Central Hawke’s Bay council, and leased to Sereena and Donald Parkinson.
In August 2020 the Civic Theatre hosted the premiere of romantic drama “This Town”, which was written and directed by, and starred, David White, and had been filmed in Central Hawke’s Bay in 2018.
There is a very well-appointed single seating block, with steeply raked seating - and, in a nice touch, comfortable free-standing sofas across the front row.
This ‘mini-complex’ is also home to Latitude 40 South CafĂ© and the Roaring 40’s Takeaway.
