Mayfair Cinema

Located in the coastal resort of Napier, in the Hawke’s Bay region of the North Island, the Mayfair Cinema was opened by the mayor, C. O. Morse, on 12th February 1935.

Given its relatively small seating capacity (for the time), it was advertised as “The little theatre with the big attractions”.

It was owned by Napier Amusements, but was acquired by Kerridge Odeon in the late-1940’s.

The Mayfair Cinema, which became well known for its ‘B’ movie programming, closed in 1965.

The cinema was demolished and replaced by a much larger building, initially occupied by the Manchester Unity Friendly Society, a country-wide not-for-profit organisation.

After the Society moved out, the building was refurbished and, still known as the Manchester Unity Building, it is now an office block, with retail units on the ground floor.
