The Colusa Herald reported the old Colusa Theatre on fifth Street closed May 10, 1931, in preparation for the new Colusa Theatre opening on May 15, 1931.
Previously called the Star Theatre, which opened around 1915, it became Strand Theatre in 1919 and then the Colusa Theatre in 1929. Film Daily Year Book 1929 listed the Strand Theatre with 260 seats. On August 20, 1929, the Colusa Theatre presented Colusa’s first talking picture, Clara Bow in “Dangerous Curves”. The operator, Ned Steele, was also president of the Colusa Telephone Exchange.
As listed on Sanborn Maps 1918, it was located in the Golden Eagle Hotel, next to the IOOF Building. In 1925 it was reported the Star Theatre installed a marquee to match the IOOF marquee.
The site today would be the Colusa County Family Resource Center, while the 1892 Odd Fellows Hall can be seen next door.
