Stanley Spoehr opened Henderson’s first movie theater, The Nickelodeon Theatre on December 15, 1906 playing one reel shorts at noon and 6p. The location was 118-120 North Main. He started with 1898’s “The Deserter” and “Tom Boys” supported by an illustrated song. In August 1912, Spoehr launched his second movie theater with the Princess (later Kimmel) at 212 Second Street(It has its own page on Cinema Treasures). His Nickelodeon Company also had possession of the Lyric Theatre at 126 North Main Street.
In 1915, Spoehr’s Nickelodeon Company was sued. The Lyric Theatre was the first theatre to close. The Nickelodeon Theatre was sold to S.W. Watson who refreshed the venue adding 100 “wicker chairs”. The update wasn’t enough as better theatres had come into downtown. The Nickelodeon Theatre was the second Sparer venue to close at the expiry of a 10-year leasing period. The building was retrofitted in 1917 becoming The Hub, a clothing store.
