The Mainichi Nagoya Kaikan opened its doors on September 7, 1953 in a building that later became the Mainichi Shimbun Chubu Headquarters, and a second theater named the Nagoya Daiei Theater opened its doors on March 31, 1956 in the basement with a capacity of 1,027 seats.

When Daiei went bankrupt in 1971, the site of Nagoya Daiei was transferred to Shochiku, and was reopened as the Nagoya Shochiku-za theater in December of that same year, marking the first time in 26 years since the Shochiku-za name had been revived since the destruction of the former Suehiro-za during the Nagoya air raids on March 12, 1945.

It remained as a Shochiku theater for decades, but during its final days as a 642-seat single-screener, its format flipped to Toei in exchange for programming with Grand 2 in the Toyota Building, and the theater closed on January 31, 2002.

After five years of darkness, the theater was rebuilt during construction of the new Midland Square. On March 6, 2007, the theater and the square held its grand opening with 14 screens and 2,205 seats on the site of the former Mainichi Nagoya Kaikan and Toyota Building.

Screen 1 is the largest with 319 seats featuring 3D installations (alongside Screens 6, 9, and 10), while Screen 14 is the smallest with 90 seats. The rest of the auditoriums have heir ranging capacities of 99-296. Screen 5 features installations of Dolby Cinema.
