The Sanyu-kan Theater opened its doors as a single-screener in 1925 and was renamed the “Nikkatsu-kan” in the 1950’s when it became the operation of Nikkatsu. At the time, it attracted many audiences for a while. For several years, the theater was a second-run theater for Japanese movies, it showed triple features of Toho, Toei, and Shochiku movies in the second week of their releases.
Toho took over as the main role of the theater in the 1970’s, and was renamed the “Sapporo Toho Plaza”. Unfortunately they are not so successful during their days screening more towards Toho and France Film Company features. But later in the decade, the theater began playing American features from Paramount and 20th Century Fox and officially became a huge success. This was followed by major renovation and the main auditorium was split into two in March 1981. Furthermore, in another renovation in 2003, the number of seats in both theaters was reduced by about 100 seats, allowing for more space between the seats and in the seats.
The Sapporo Toho Plaza closed for the final time on August 31, 2010.
