3 Arts Theatre

Located in the Plumstead district to the south of the city. The 3 Arts Theatre was built in 1967. It was built with renforced concrete. It was designed for both live theatre (with a revolve on the stage) and cinema use with a giant 40 metres wide & 13 metres high curved screen which was used for Cinerama films.

The opening stage production was the group The Sandpipers on 11th January 1968. Major theatre productions to play at the 3 Arts Theatre were the hit South African musical “Ipi Tombi” which play many theatres around the world when it went on tour. Also staged here were: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat”, “A Little Night Music” and “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas”.

Notable stars who appeared on the stage were: Chris De Burg, Chic Corea, America, Percy Sledge, Curtis Mayfield, The Troggs, Marmalade, The Temptations, Josephine Baker, Eartha Kitt, Rolf Harris, Max Bygraves, Spike Milligan, Tom Jones, Englebert Humperdink, Liberace, Petula Clark, Cilla Black, The Four Tops, Jethro Tull, Demis Russos, Richard Clyderman, Vicky Leandros, Della Reece, Millie Jackson, Tina Turner, Vera Lynn, Foster & Allen, Rod McKuen, Frankie Laine, Tavares, Edwin Starr, Issac Hayes, Victor Borg, Deep Purple, Suzi Quatro, Brook Benton, Loretta Lyne and many more.

It was closed in 2002. The building stood vacant until it was sold in October 2019 and gutted internally to become a shopping centre named 3 Arts Village Centre which opened on 2nd November 2021.
