The Auditorium was the town’s opera house built by the Martin Brothers. It launched November 9, 1912 with a live performance. As was the case in many other small towns, films were more profitable and drew more crowds than the majority of live shows. The Auditorium was renamed the Auditorium Theatre in 1914 as it switched heavily to film.
Pressure was placed on the Auditorium management when the Johnson Theatre in Carrollton just 30 miles away switched to sound-on-film technology. The Auditorium Theatre switched from silent to Vitaphone discs in 1930. Operator D.W. Michael switched to sound on film thereafter to remain viable.
On October 4, 1932, the Auditorium Theatre played “Bachelor’s Affairs” with Adolphe Menjou. The next morning, on October 5, 1932, the Auditorium Theatre burned to the ground. In 1933, the Michlo Theatre replaced the former Auditorium (It has its own page on Cinema Treasures).
