The Starlite Drive-In was built by Roy L. Champion with help from the Frank Rightmyer Construction Company on Highway 158 located southeast of Roanoke Rapids, and opened its gates on July 8, 1948 with a one-day showing of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in “Pardon My Sarong” along with an unnamed cartoon. It was operated by the General Amusements Company of Roanoke Rapids.

The Starlite Drive-In closed in 1964 and was demolished in the fall of that same year to make way for the Oakland Shopping Center which completed in August 1965.
