Construction of the Meade Cinema II was led by Skateland operator Gene Singleton, who has his business located next door to the theater. The theater itself is a 9,600 square feet twin-screen cinema, with a total capacity of 514 seats (with 312 seats for one screen and 202 seats for the other) alongside a 9x10ft marquee sign facing the bypass.
The Meade Cinema II opened its doors on September 28, 1984 with Bill Murray in “Ghostbusters” in Screen 1 and Walt Disney’s animated feature “The Jungle Book” in Screen 2, and was managed by Perry Curl.
Unfortunately, in July 1989, five businesses (including two from Meade County and another from neighboring Hardin County) sued Farmers Deposit Bank for payment of $66,569.47 (plus interest), for services rendering to Branco Construction, the company who constructed the theater in its entirety. When Branco began working with the theater’s construction during the final week of April 1984, Singleton never paid them for the work on his theater. Singleton told them four months later that the bank would not pay anymore of the bills until the job was complete.
The Meade Cinema II closed its doors for the final time on February 6, 1987 when Farmers Deposit purchased the cinema for $205,000, with bank representatives had sought buyers of the property until July 1 of that year when the cinema was again put on the auction block and sold for $97,905 which included a 7% selling fee led by local businessman Ray Cottrell, and Singleton would later file his businesses for bankruptcy in December 1987.
