The Kino Wimpassing opened its doors on September 8, 1989 as a 220-seat single-screener, and is a sister to the nearby 336-seat 3-screen Stadtkino in neighboring Ternitz (which opened more than eight years prior to the Kino Wimpassing).

Both the Ternitz Stadtkino and the Kino Wimpassing were operated by the husband-and-wife team of Mario and Erika Picalek.
