The triplex Kyoto Cinema was built at Cocon Karasuma as a replacement of the 158-seat twin-screen Kyoto Asahi Cinema which closed in January 2003 after almost 15 years of operation. As a result, former manager Masako Kamiya alongside other staff members of the former Kyoto Asahi Cinema established a new company, and while holding screenings at other facilities, they immediately worked towards opening a new cinema.

The Kyoto Cinema opened its doors on December 4, 2004 with a total capacity of 254 seats, with Screen 1 having 104 seats, Screen 2 having 89 seats. and Screen 3 having 61 seats. All three auditoriums were dipped in three different colors (red for Screen 1, green for Screen 2, and blue for Screen 3). It also features Dolby Digital Surround EX and DTS installations.

Unfortunately the Kyoto Cinema faced trouble following the opening of the nearby T-Joy Kyoto in the AEON Mall Kyoto due to the fact that the Kyoto Cinema’s financial condition became worse.
