Carroll Drive-In

On July 25, 1953, Boxoffice magazine wrote that the Carroll Drive-In in McKenzie, north of Huntingdon, had been opened by Rockwood Amusement Co. of Nashville.

The 1961 Motion Picture Almanac included the Carroll Drive-In, capacity 230 cars, owner Rockwood Amusement Co.

Rockwood may have operated the Carroll Drive-In for its entire life. The last note I could find was when Rockwood closed it for the season in October 1969.

Found It!

The address is 18881 TN-22, McKenzie, TN.

This places it several miles north of Huntingdon on HWY 22 as the ad in the photo section states.

The drive-in first appears in a 1955 aerial (partially as the photo cuts off) and is still intact in a 1985 aerial, although trails that cut across the drive-in are indications that it may have closed. By 1997, it was demolished.

Today, the property is home to High Point Storage which is near the airport. You can just see hints of some of the ramps.

I’m very sure the Carroll made it to the 80s, despite the fading traces.

A 1981 aerial shows the drive-in intact and looking operational.

The 1985 aerial as I mentioned before has at least one trail cutting across the drive-in from the projection booth due north to the road.

Trails like that are a good indication that a drive-in has closed. So, it very well could’ve been open in 1981, but it appears to have closed by 1984, which would give enough time for such a trail to be made.
