Ground was broken in August 1913 for construction of the John Gartner Theatre Building on the west side of Oakley Avenue midway between Sibley Street and State Street. The theatre shows in a 1915 Sanborn Map at what was then 612 Oakley Avenue. The showplace didn’t last long. The Gartner Theatre closed in January 1916. After a $500 remodel the space became a retail store.
The First Baptist Church is on the west side of Oakley Avenue today.
