Max Helfer opened the Auditorium Theatre on November 16, 1918. The debut program featured William S. Hart in “The Lone Stranger” and a comedy.
The Auditorium Theatre was at the northeast corner of Calumet Avenue and Hoffman Street in Hammond, IN, at what was then 367 Calumet Avenue. (Hammond underwent a city-wide street renumbering in 1930, so the address would be different today.) A 1915 Sanborn map shows a saloon and hall at this location.
The last Auditorium Theatre advertisement with Max Helfer as proprietor appeared on November 26, 1921. The theatre advertised periodically in 1922 but not after November 17, 1922.
There was also an Auditorium Theatre on Michigan Avenue in Indiana Harbor, IN.
