Located in Sutton, originally in Surrey, but today a southwestern district of Greater London, the Throwley Yard Cinema is the latest venture from the Really Local Group, which only opened its first venue, at Catford Mews, in March 2019 but has since opened the Ealing Project, Reading Biscuit Factory and Sidcup Storyteller (see separate Cinema Treasures entries).

Their focus is on ‘community’, and their venues, which occupy large spaces, all have exhibition, performance and community use areas.

The Throwley Yard Cinema is no exception (and also includes a food hall). A joint venture between the Group and Sutton Council, it occupies the site of the former Chicago’s nightclub, which closed in 2013. It is part of the council’s wider plan to re-develop the High Street, for which it won £11.35m from the government’s Future High Streets Fund in 2021.

There are four screens. However, only Screens 2 and 3 were operational when the cinema opened on Friday 21st June 2024. These were showing children’s favourite “Inside Out” and crime drama “The Bikeriders”.
