The Roper Theatre was a post-War movie house opened by Henry S. Everett and H.L. Lewis on December 23, 1947. With 170 seats in the orchestra and 87 seats in the balcony reserved for African American patrons, the theatre reached capacity on its first night.
On the theatre’s 5th Anniversary and not long after its final screening of “I Dream of Jeanie” with Eileen Christy, fire ended the Roper Theatre.
