Picture Palace

In Hythe, Kent, the Picture Palace opened on 12th April 1911 on the site of the Sportsman public house, which had burnt down. The dome-shaped paybox was covered in gold leaf, and a set of marble steps led to the auditorium.

According to the 1915 Kinematograph Year Book, it was operated by Hythe Picture Palace Ltd; in the 1928 edition the operator was shown as Hythe Picture Palace (1913) Ltd (with J. H. Kent as the managing director).

The 1928 edition lists shows as being “continuous”, with a matinee on Saturdays and two changes of programme each week.

However, by the time that had been published, the Picture Palace had closed, on 9th April 1927.

Its staff were transferred to its successor, the Grove Cinema (see separate Cinema Treasures entry).

The building moved into retail use, but was bombed during the war. So modern shops are on the site, opposite Theatre Street.
