Stockton’s opera house was constructed in 1885. The building was a triple storefront two-story structure of rather blocky appearance, constructed of local limestone with a simple tin cornice. The theater occupied the upper story over the western 2/3.
This was a fairly large auditorium for such a small town. By no later than 1914, movies were being shown here. It is unknown when it closed, but it was gone from listings by 1926.
This portion of the building was given an ugly slipcover sometime around 1960-70, and the ground floor was used as retail. The 2014 street-view shows a bit of hope as some of the slipcover’s panels have fallen off, but hope was brutally extinguished by a repulsive facade of gray sheet metal on the most recent view.
The corner portion of this building shows a bit of the original appearance, although the ground floor has been butchered, and the windows covered with sheet metal. The building seems to be school district offices, although the upper floor is likely derelict.
