Linda Theatre

Opened as the Bijou Theatre in 1937 seating 750 in a neighborhood house on a single floor. It was remodeled in 1951 and renamed Linda Theatre but closed on September 28, 1952 with Bowery Boys in “Crazy Over Horses” & Dana Andrews in “I Want You”. In 1953 it was demolished to make way for the Watkings trafficway.

It was located on the corner of Prospect Avenue and E. 50th Street.

I remember going to the Bijou in the 1940’s and never remember seeing or hearing it called the Linda. Thanks for the picture.

The address for the Bijou is wrong. It was on the east side of Prospect. So it couldn’t be “5002”. The address would have ended in an odd number. This was a neighborhood theatre of mine, and I grew up there in the 1940’s and 50’s. The theatre started out as the Bijou and was renamed later to the Linda. Not the other way around.

The Linda appears to have closed for good on Sunday, September 28, 1952 with the Bowery Boys in CRAZY OVER HORSES and Dana Andrews in I WANT YOU. [Kansas City Star]
