Colonial Theatre

The Colonial Theatre was opened in late-February 1913. This theatre appears on the 1921 Sanborn, in a fairly basic one story brick commercial building. Given the long gaps between maps (the prior map is from 1900), it’s impossible to say when this was constructed. It was still open in 1938, but had closed by 1939 (The Clarion Theatre had opened in town in 1938)

The building has been demolished and the site is now a parking lot.

News from the March 1, 1913 issue of Motography: “W. F. Smith, formerly located in De Soto as a furniture dealer, opened the Colonial moving picture and vaudeville house at Clarion, Iowa, which is apparently a credit to its proprietors' enterprise and thrift. Mr. Smith’s new theater is of colonial design, furnished throughout in mission furniture. It will be used for occasional vaudeville attractions and for continuous picture shows.”
