Located in Gaza City, Palestine. The Samer Cinema was opened in 1944. It was closed in 1967 following Israel’s attack on Gaza. When the war ended other cinemas in Gaza reopened, but the Samer Cinema remained closed and mothballed. During the 1987 Palestinian uprising all 7 other cinemas in Gaza closed.
After 50 years being closed, the Samer Cinema reopened for one day on 26th August 2017 when the Palestinian Authority was established screening the Gaza-made movie “Ten Years”. It has been closed since the Hamas authorities were voted in and basically banned movies being screened. The Samer Cinema is now used as a car dealership.
