The Sumner Opera House opened its doors on August 18, 1882 with a special Harvest Dance performance, and was first operated by Peter Forssman.
S.F. Cass took over the operations of the house in February 1887 and would eventually remodel the theater and became known as the Cass Opera House. This would then eventually become a movie house later on. The original Opera House building measured 34x80ft and was located on the corner north of King’s hotel and fronts the east.
The Cass Opera House became simply known as the Cass Theatre in 1938, and on September 1, 1940, it was renamed Sumner Theatre after it passed ownership of L.L. Wells. Harry Pace would later take ownership in July 1944 after a brief stay in California.
On November 24, 1948, the Sumner Theatre closed its doors for the final time in connection with the opening of the then-new Sunset Theatre.
