The Cinema Salam was opened in 1946. All seating was on a single floor. It was designed by French architect George Appere. The cinema had closed by 1960. The city was hit by an earthquake on February 29, 1960 and many buildings were destroyed. The vacant Cinema Salam survived undamaged and was used by 400 people as a shelter.
There are hopes that perhaps one day it will reopen.
