Located in the Steveston neighborhood. The Steva Theatre, Richmond’s first, was opened in 1947 by Mr. WA Thorne prompting the Richmond Review newspaper to report, “all of Richmond is expected to be interested…for finally - Lulu Island has a theatre!”
The property was formerly occupied by the Star Hotel which burned in the 1918 Steveston fire. The first Japanese Buddhist Temple was built on the site in 1924 and was the heart of the Japanese community until the wartime internment.
The temple was converted into the Steva Theatre which operated until 1960. It later housed The Arts Connection and today is Stars Of Tomorrow Early Learning Center. History credit Friends of the Richmond Archives.
